Steph Byrne selected field hockey player of the year; 32 Saint Francis students honored in All Mercury News High School Awards
On Dec. 14, the San Jose Mercury News published its All Mercury News High School Awards for the fall season recognizing the region’s top high school athletes. All told, 32 Saint Francis student-athletes in five sports were selected for these honors. Perhaps most notable is selection of Steph Byrne as the San Jose Mercury News player of the year for Field Hockey. Congratulations to all fall athletes for an outstanding season. (Dec. 14)

Annual food drive a success; over 500 families to benefit from school-wide effort
More than 100 students packed enough boxes to go to 531 households during the Nov. 16 school event. The food will go to local families selected by the staffs of the local chapter of Saint Vincent dePaul Society, Catholic Worker, El Camino Hospital Dialysis Center and three other agencies. (Nov. 20)

Symphonic Band earns highest overall score at the Lincoln Band Review; Jazz Band earns first in division and Marching Band and Colorguard take second place

Three Saint Francis bands and the Colorguard, competed with 20 high school programs from northern California in the Lincoln Band Review in Stockton on Sat., Nov. 17. The Jazz and Symphonic Bands took first place in their divisions and the Symphonic Band earned the highest score in the entire festival! The Marching Band and colorguard finished strong with second place finishes in their division. Congratulations to all who participated! (Nov. 20)

Girls field hockey 2007 CCS champions; Girls volleyball continues to NorCal
A Decisive 4-1 win over Los Gatos High School on Saturday earned the girls field hockey team the #1 spot in CCS. The girls volleyball team finished #2 in CCS and will continue to the NorCal Volleyball Tournament where they will face Pleasant Valley High School on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Chico. Three Saint Francis High School scholar-athletes sign national letters of intent to play Division 1 sports in college

Three scholar-athletes were recognized by coaches, the press and the SFHS community for having signed letters of intent to play college sports on Thursday.
The following students signed letters of intent: Alyson Geppert will play basketball for CalPoly San Luis Obispo; Ashley Malone will play volleyball at Georgetown University; and, Ryan Van Amberg will play baseball at Pepperdine University. (Nov. 15)

Girls Water Polo advances to CCS Championship
Girls water polo defeated Santa Cruz Wednesday night in the Central Coast Section Division II girls water polo semifinal at Lynbrook High. The Lancers put on a three-goal spurt in the last four minutes of the match for a 7-4 win, jettisoning them into Saturday's championship match against Sacred Heart Prep at Independence High in San Jose for the DII title at 10 a.m. (Nov. 15)

Kim Oden inducted into the San Jose Hall of Fame
Kim Oden, Saint Francis counselor, varsity girls volleyball coach and diversity coordinator was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame November 14. Ms. Oden’s remarkable volleyball career is studded with significant accomplishments that make her a standout in the community. The event was held at the HP Pavilion Thurs., Nov. 14. (Nov. 15)

Girls Field Hockey and Boys Water Polo advance to CCS championships
The girls field hockey team defeated Mitty 1-0 Tuesday to move into the CCS finals versus Los Gatos. The team will play at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Willow Glen High School.

The boys water polo teams beat Menlo School 10-6 in the CCS semifinals game Tuesday at Lynbrook. The team faces Sacred Heart Prep in the CCS championship game on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 11:45 a.m. at Independence High School. (Nov. 14)

Saint Francis partners with the Mountain View - Los Altos High School District to co-sponsor PBS “Not in Our School” event
An exciting collaboration between Saint Francis High School and the Mountain View - Los Altos High School District will culminate in an evening of art, film and discussion about diversity, tolerance and confronting bias, Thursday, November 15, at the Los Altos High cafeteria and theater. (Nov. 13)

Lunchtime engineering forum draws a crowd
Over 35 students gathered for a lunchtime presentation about careers in engineering. Ramzi Bualuan, the University of Notre Dame’s director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering led a discussion about educational paths and careers in engineering.

Boys Cross Country wins CCS Title
Led by Phil Pompei and a great team effort, the boys cross country team won the CCS championship on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Crystal Springs. They will move onto the State Championships in Fresno on Saturday November 24th. On the girls side, the team came in 4th and will not advance as a team, but senior Shelby Golan will move on as an individual after a 2nd place finish overall. (Nov. 12)

Saint Francis hosts case study event examining the Holocaust
Saint Francis High School hosted a Facing History workshop November 7. Forty community members including parents, students and over 20 local educators attended the evening of curriculum and instruction surrounding the events of Kristallnacht or "the night of broken glass" in 1938. (Nov. 8)

Campus Ministry's Sue Fullerton recognized by Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County
Mrs. Fullerton was selected as a volunteer who is making a difference by Catholic Charities in their November newsletter. Mrs Fullerton was recognized for her work in connecting Saint Francis student volunteers with the John XXIII Multi-Service Center for low-income seniors. (Nov. 7)

Saint Francis grad Bryan Giudicelli ('07) named Rookie of the Week
IvyLeagueSports.com named Dartmouth freshman defender Bryan Giudicelli Rookie of the Week for scoring his first collegiate goal - the game-winner - in the Big Green's crucial 3-1 victory over Cornell. The win keeps Dartmouth in the Ivy title hunt, setting up a big showdown at Brown next weekend. (Nov. 6)

Je'Marcus Williams is one of the leaders of the stout Saint Francis defense. The 3-2-1 Lancers are in the middle of a fierce West Catholic League race and the defense has been solid, holding four of six opponents to 15 or fewer points and allowing no one to top 21.

Saint Francis community unites in celebration of Blessed Basil Moreau
On Tuesday, October 2, Saint Francis students, faculty and staff came together for a liturgy honoring Blessed Basil Moreau. Two weeks earlier, Principal Mrs.Tennant and Director of Campus Ministry Sal Chavez joined members of the Holy Cross Congregation from around the world in France for the official Beatification ceremony on September 15.

On the heels of their impressive tournament championship win over Menlo School at the Scott Roche Invitational last weekend, the boys water polo team, No. 2 in the Mercury News rankings, was interviewed this week for the upcoming broadcast of Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area. The show airs on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 7 and 11 p.m. on Your TV20/Cable 13 and on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet.

SIxteen Saint Francis students named Semifinalists in 2008 National Merit Scholarship Competition
Sixteen seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 53nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists are those students who score highest in each state, representing less than 1% of California’s high school seniors. (Sept. 12)

Student musicians and vocalists take a trip Down Under
A total of 75 combined members of the symphonic and jazz bands and chamber choir along with 35 adults, including band director Danna Mitchell, traveled to Sydney Australia this summer (June 11-21) for a 10-day excursion. (Sept. 4)

Wrestler earns All-American status, makes school history
In July, Drew Meulman ’10 became the first wrestler in school history to earn All-American status. He competed in the USA Wrestling National Freestyle tournament in Fargo, ND, and took 5th place at 189 lbs. (Aug. 29)

Entire SFHS staff gives back to the community
On Wed., Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the entire SFHS staff volunteered at eleven different community-service organizations on a fully contracted workday. This has been a biennial tradition for the last 12 years as a part of the school’s fall staff kickoff orientation series. (Aug 16)
