Some Spectacular Early Marks at Practice Meet On Thursday February 26 Saint Francis hosted both Mountain View and California High Schools in a practice meet. There were close to 500 competitors at this meet (about the size of the CCS Top 8 meet!). No score was kept but there some very fine early-season marks. Glen Borel had a very good day with times for 10.94 in the 100 and 22.91 in the 200. Courtney Albini ran 5:27.31 / 11:37.44 1600 / 3200 double. Phillip DePond jumped 20’ 8” in the Long Jump, Mele Penitani threw 119’ 5” in the Discus, Jeff Butler threw the Shot 47’ 8”, and the Boys 4x100 ran 44.00. Garret Rowe of Mountain View ran an outstanding time of 9:27 in the 3200 – one of the fastest times in the state this year. |

Monica Harnoto : More Than Just a Runner Not only is Monica Harnoto a gifted Track athlete, but she has also been selected as only one of 2 high school students from the USA to go to Scotland this summer to represent us in an International Environmental Conference. Senior Monica Harnoto is well on her way to educating young people about making good choices about the environment. She is one of two American high school students who will represent the United States at an international environmental conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland. Monica, the president of the Environmental Club for the past two years, has been selected as a California Climate Champion for 2009 after an application process that included an interview, a project proposal for an environmental program and an original news story about climate change. Much to her surprise, she was also selected as an International Climate Champion, which will allow her to attend a planning workshop in Scotland Feb. 23-27. She will have opportunities to share ideas about global projects and learn what other young people are doing about climate change in their communities. It is through her work with the Environmental Club during the last two years that she said she became more spirited about protecting the planet. She is most interested in learning about harnessing renewable energy sources and hopes to study environmental issues in college. “This has made me more dedicated and passionate,” she said. |
