11th Annual Run for Zimbabwe Orphans and Fair This year’s Run for the Zimbabwe Orphans event will be held on Sunday, March 28 at 1:00pm at Saint Joseph’s School in Mountain View (just down Miramonte). This run is not only a fundraiser for Zumbabwe, but is a great service project for the team. All funds raised in the family event go through Mrs. Clark’s charity The Sustainable Living Foundation to help orphaned children in this African country. This year’s poster, flyer and additional information is available We have been supporting Mrs. Clark’s effort with this run for the previous 10 years. |

WCAL: Sacred Heart Cathedral Comes to Saint Francis On Wednesday Sacred Heart from San Francisco kicked off the start of the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) season with a due meet at Saint Francis. The Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls and Frosh/Spoh Boys each won their divisions. The Junior Varisty Girls fell to the Irish by 7 points (the first dual meet loss for the JV Lancers Girls in 5 years). |

Mt. Pleasant Relays It turned out to be a perfect day for track & field at the Mt Pleasant Relays at Mt Pleasant High School: Cloudy, cool and not a drop of rain. Both teams ran a very limited squad. On the track, the Varsity Girls 4x400 team of Danielle Baker, Lauren Tarantino, Katie Garrity & Lauren Madigan won the event with an excellent early season time of 4:06.43 (unofficial). The 4x100 and 4x800 took second, with the 4x100 running over 2 seconds faster than their time in this event last year. In the 4x800, Maddy Roemer smashed her previous PR in the 800 by 10 seconds, with a time of 2:24. The 4x1600 ran a strong 5th in a very competitive race. In the field events, our young pole vault and long jump teams each placed 3rd. All in all a great day! On the Varsity Boys side, the Boys Pole Vault team of Shawn Toney (14-06), Tim Enbom (11-00), Austin Chadwick (10-00) and Marc Toney (10-00) took first place, and Lawerence Livers finished 5th in both the Long Jump and the Triple Jump with a marks of 40-03.5 and 19-11. How to Run a Perfect 800 The 1972 Olympics will always be remembered for terrorists killing several athletes from Israel, Frank Shorter winning the marathon “behind” an imposter, Steve Prefontaine running a 3:57 last mile to take 4th in the 5,000 meters, and Dave Wottle winning the Gold medal in the 800 meters by “coming from behind with a tremendous kick.” Actually, his splits were nearly identical for all 4 of his 200 segments (26.x seconds each) of the race. At the first 200 meter mark most athletes would have given up being so far behind. Take a look here at an extraordinary race. Thanks to Hank Lawson for reminding me of this. |

Schedule Updates, Including Change to Inter-squad There is a new schedule available. The biggest change to the schedule is the shifting of the Inter-squad meet from a 2-day event on Thursday and Friday to a 1-day event and Parent Meeting on Saturday February 27. The MANDATORY Parent Meeting begins at 10:00am, and the inter-squad goes from 10:30am until 2:00pm. The new coaches this year are Anthony Rivera (Throws) and Jason Hinkin (Pole Vault). |

It’s Time to Start Thinking Track and Field… The start of the Track and Field season is just around the corner. The official start dates are: Varsity Boys and Girls February 1 F/S Boys and Gris February 8 Until then, there are conditioning opportunities available to all Saint Francis students (track or other sport) as follows: All throwers (wtg.room) Mon., Wed., Fri., 4:00 - 5:00 Boys sprint, jump, hurdle Mon., Tues., Thur. 2:30 - 3:00 All Girls Events Tues., Wed., Thur. 20min after school Boys distance (room 403) after school If you do not have a valid physical form on file, download it and get it done. You are not allowed to practice with the team if it is not done. You must also have an Emergency and Travel Permission form on file by the first day of practice. Get in shape! Stay in shape! Be ready! The first meet is on March 4! Oh, and just to get you in the mood, take a look at last year’s CCS Girls 4x400, Boys 100 and Boys 4x100 movies., and also the Girls 4x400 from Mt. Sac (some poor hand-off, but some great and gutsy running, especially Shanie Landen’s last leg). |

Coach Muller Rejoins the Track Team Coach Lesley Muller has officially rejoined the Track team as an assistant coach for the 2010 season. She will be Primarily assisting Mike Saso with the Boy sprinters, and helping out Mandy Benham with Girl distance runners.. Welcome back Coach Muller. |

2010 CCS At-Large Marks are now avaiable. The Central Coast Section Track and field Championships At-large marks (the marks you can set at the WCAL Championship meet in order to qualify for the CCS meet even if you do not finish in the top 2 at the meet) are now available 2010 CCS At-Large. |

Saint Francis to Host WCAL in 2010 Saint Francis will be hosting the 2010 WCAL Trials and Finals. We are trying to move the meet from the typical Wednesday/Thursday afternoon and Saturday schedule to Tuesday/Wednesday evening for the Trials, and Friday night for the Finals. Stay tuned… Note: The Frosh/Soph Boys 1600, 3200, High Jump and Pole Vault have their Finals on the Trials date (there are no Trials for these events). Similarly, the Girls Junior Varsity Finals in the same events on the Trials date as well. There are no Trials for the Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls 1600, 3200 and Pole Vault events (these are Finals events only). |
