New Website Coming Soon…

The website has not been converted over to the 2008 season yet due to a major reformatting of all the St. Francis websites.  The new website design is supposed to be completed by mid-October.  At that time the 2008 Track website will be unveiled as well.  For now, the 2008 Schedule and 2008 State At-Large marks are available here.

Natasha Second, Andy Sixth at State

Senior Natasha Barthel finished #2 (tied in DyeStatCal.com results, #3 in Lynbrook results) in the Girls Pole Vault at the California State Track and Field Championship Finals on Saturday in Sacramento.  Natasha’s mark of 12’ 10” was her second best mark of the year (she cleared 13’ 0” at the SI Meet in May).  The event was won by Tori Anthony of Castelleja in a new meet record of 14’ 1”.  Natasha will be attending Stanford next year to continue vaulting..

Senior Andy Vargas grabbed sixth place in the Shot Put finals with a throw of 57’ 11”.  Andy threw a PR of 58’ 7.25” on Friday in the preliminaries.  Andy will be attending San Jose State next year to play football.

Natasha and Andy Qualify for Finals…

Both Natasha Barthel and Andy Vargas qualified for their respective finals in the California State Track & Field Championship meet being held at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.  Natasha cleared 12’ 3” in the Pole Vault (along with most of the rest of the field) to become one of the 9 qualifiers for Saturday’s final event.  Andy threw a personal best of 58’ 7.25” in the Shot Put to finish fourth in the qualification round.

Wondering how you did this year?  Well, the 2007 End-of-the-Year Performance List for the Girls team is available here.  Check it out.  Also, I’m still working on the WCAL Finals pictures (Luke took over 400 of them), and Mr. Ong has some more pictures on the way.  Stay tuned.

Two Qualify for State

Seniors Natasha Barthel (second in the Pole Vault at 12’ 8”) and Andy Vargas (third in the Shot Put at 55’ 11.25”). Both qualified for next Saturday’s California State Track and Field Championships in Sacramento.  Click here for complete results of the Central Coast Section Championships, including how our other CCS Championship qualifiers (Tyler Benham [PV: 3 at 14’ 0”], Adam Campi [PV: 5 at 14’ 0”], Katie Ring [TJ: 6 at 35’ 5.5”] and Casey Roche [LJ: 5 at 21’ 11.75”]) fared at the meet.  The Girls team finished 17 out of 43, and the Boys team finished 11 out of 38.

Natasha Barthel Named CIF Scholar-Athlete of the Year!

Today senior Natasha Barthel was named the one and only California State Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.  For all sports in the state of California – not just Track!  Her credentials are two many to list all of them here. But being the #3 jumper in the state, # 5 all-time in California, # 6 in the country, and in the Top 10 academically at St. Francis is a good start.  Congratulations Natasha.  The full CIF News Release is available here.

Team Awards and Potluck

Sunday at St. Francis the Boys and Girls Track teams held their annual team awards and potluck.  In addition to the typical recognition of the great job the athletes did this year, we also honored The Seniors and two school records this year: Natasha Barthel in the Pole Vault, and the Girls 4x800 Relay team of Shelby Golan, Ashmi Pathela, Alyssa Arvin and Adriana Romero.  More pictures are available here.

Six Qualify for CCS Finals

At today’s CCS Semi-Finals at San Jose City College 6 St. Francis athletes qualified for next Friday nights CCS Finals in Gilroy.  The athletes are:  Natasha Barthel (PV), Katie Ring (TJ), Andy Vargas (Shot), Casey Roche (LJ), Adam Campi (PV) and Brett Benham (PV).  Then crew is pictured at left with Coaches Tom Tuite, Steve Fuller, Mike Saso and Brian Gartin.  Complete results are available here.

Team Awards / Potluck This Sunday

The Boys and Girls Track teams will celebrate the season with our annual potluck and awards presentation on Sunday, May 20 4:00 – 7:00pm.  The school will provide the drink, pictures and awards; and we (the team members) will supply the food.  Athletes are asked to bring food for 8 in the following categories:

Natasha Joins the Elite 13-Foot Club

Jumping at St. Ignatius on Wednesday with a sore back, senior Natasha Barthel won the competition and cleared 13’ 0” in the Pole Vault.  The mark is a new School Record (Natasha set the old record from last year at 12’ 7”) and places her #11 on the All Time California State List.  There are only 7 13-foot Girl Vaulters in the country, and only 3 in the State.

VG Girls Win, JV Girls Loose to SI

The Varsity Girls team beat SI at SI on Wednesday to complete our season in second place with a 6 and 1 record.  The JV Girls lost to SI to finish third in the league with a 5 and 2 record.

The Varsity Boys lost to St. Ignatius at SI by 2 points.  They finish the season with a 5-2 record in the League.  The Frosh/Soph Boys also lost to SI on Wednesday.

Girls win Both Against Valley Christian

The Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls upped their league record to 5 and 1 with double victories at Valley Christian on Wednesday.  Freshman Samantha Marvca had impressive times in both the 400 (winning in 62.0) and 200 (second in 26.1) despite very windy conditions.  The Varsity girls also won the 800 (Ashmi Pathela in 2:28.1), 1600 (Courtney Albini in 5:45.7), 3200 (Courtney in 12:22.0), 300IH (Rachel Gate in 49.3), Long Jump (Pryia Mathew), Triple Jump (Kaitlyn Sulenski), Shot (Mele Penitani) and Discus (Katie Lainer).  The Pole Vault was not contested.

Boys Win Varsity and F/S vs. Valley Christian

Both the Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams defeated Valley Christian and Valley Christian on Wednesday.  Senior Mike Calcagno won both the 1600 and 3200, and fellow senior Andy Vargas took both the Shot and Discus.  The Pole Vault was not contested.

Girls Succeed Over Presentation

The St. Francis Girls Track and Field Team defeated both the Varsity and JV Girls teams from Presentation yesterday.  The Varsity score was 79.5 to 55.5.  The JV meet was much closer (it was decided by the Long Jump and 4x400 at the very end of the meet).  The score was 65 to 56.  Highlights include Mele Penitani winning the Shot Put in 31’ 3.5”, Natasha Barthel breaking out of here 12’ 7” “rut” with a jump of 9’ 6” (she only took the one jump to win it), Katie L:ainer winning the Discus in 99’ 2”, and freshmen Samantha Marvca running a fine 61.78 in the 400Tiffany Yee (13.13 in the 100 and 26.38 in the 200) and Hailey Lott (13.1 hand-timed 100 and 27.08 in the 200) both ran excellent non-winning times.

Boys Loose 2 to Bellarmine

The Lancer Boys lost two tough contests to a very good Bellarmine team yesterday.  St. Francis highlights include Casey Roche jumping 22’ 7.5” in the Long Jump, Andy Vargas throwing 54’ 7” (and fouling on a tremendous 59+ throw)in the Shot Put, Adam Campi winning the Pole Vault in 13’ 6”, Omar Bourgoub taking the High Jump in 5’ 10”, and LashJohn Johnson jumping 41’ 5” to win the Triple Jump.

Vaulters Do It Again at Mt. Sac

Continuing where they left off last weekend at Arcadia, this weekend at the Mt. Sac Relays Casey Roche won the Boys Invitational Pole Vault with a new Meet Record of 16' 8", and Natasha Barthel took third in the Girls Invitational Pole Vault with a mark of 12' 7.5". Senior Adam Campi also had a good day with a PR jump of 14' 7" in the Pole Vault.  In the non-Pole Vaulting events we had the Boys 4x100 (44.56), 4x200 (1:34.95) and 4x400 (3:36.41) all run well.  Complete results are available below.

Vaulters Shine at Arcadia

Saturday at the nationally acclaimed Arcadia Invitational in southern California senior Casey Roche won the Boys Invitational Pole Vault with a height of 17’ 0”.  Second place was Nico Wieler of Los Gatos at 16’ 1”.  On the Girls side senior Natasha Barthel tied for second with Allison Stokke of Newport Harbor (2-time California State Meet Champion) in a jump of 12’ 7”.  Tori Anthony of Castilejja High School took first in 13’ 0”.  So, the two best boys vaulters and 2 of the top 3 vaulters in the State are currently within the CCS.  Should be a great meet in May!

Earlier in the day Adam Campi jumped 13’ 7” in the Open Pole Vault and Omar Bourgoub jumped 6’ 1” in the high jump.

Next weekend we send down a larger group to the Mt. Sac Relays and Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.  The team leaves at 7:00am on Friday the 13th.

Girls Set 4x800 School Record

At the Stanford Invitational Saturday the Girls team of junior Shelby Golan, junior Ashmi Pathela, junior Alyssa Arvin and freshmen Adriana Romero set a new School Record in the 3200m Relay with a time of  9:56.70.  They broke the old record of 9:58.3 set back in 1993 by Anniken Iversen, Katherine Monahan, Laura Demmellmaier, Yvette Ruccolo.

Meanwhile at Stanford…

Several of the Varsity athletes went to Stanford on Friday and Saturday for the Stanford Invitational.  Leading the way was Casey Roche winning the Boys Pole Vault in 16’ 6”, Natasha Barthel taking second in the Girls Pole Vault at 12’ 6”, Andy Vargas throwing the Shot 56’ 1” for third, the Girls 4x800 Relay running a new School Record in 9:56.70, both the Girls (4:08.14) and Boys (3:38.37) 4x400 teams running seasonal bests, and the Boys running a fine 4x100 in 44.12.  Complete results are available below.

Lancer Girls Win CCS F/S Top 8

On Friday the Saint Francis Girls Frosh-Soph athletes traveled to Los Gatos High School for the CCS F/S Top 8 meet.  The Girls won the meet with 46 points to Aptos’44.  There were some significant marks and PRs at the meet.  Audrey Kocmond and Kristen Kozlovsky both cleared 4’ 10” in the High Jump, Tatjana Nereu continued her weekly PR assault with 97’ 3” in the Discus and 31’ 6” in the Shot, Erin Yip grabbed second place in the Pole Vault at 8’ 6”, Samantha Mravca ran an impressive 61.05 in the 400, and Michelle Hess ran 53.81 in the 300IH.  Complete results are available below.

Lancer F/S Boys Qualify to the CCS Top 8 Meet

On Friday the Saint Francis F/S Boys traveled to Los Gatos High School for the CCS F/S Top 8 meet.  This meet is a qualifying meet for the F/S Boys to the CCS Top 8 meet later in April.  Several individual and relay teams made it through.  Shawn Tomey jumped 11’ 0” in the Pole Vault; Lasjohn Johnson jumped an impressive 42’ 0” in the Triple, 5’ 8” in the High and 19’ 3” in the LongAnthony Andrighetto jumped 19’ 11” in the Long Jump; Glen Hopson-Borel ran 11.41 in the 100 and 24.27 in the 200; Marty Manoukian ran 24.39 in the 200; and the 4x100 went 45.36 and the 4x400 ran 3:41.90.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Comes to Town…

St. Francis hosted Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco in St. Francis’ final WCAL home meet of the year.  The Boys and the Girls both won both divisions.  The Girls scores were 119 to 20 (Varsity) and 102 to 28 (JV).  The Boys scores were 117 to 19 and 93 (Varsity) to 38 (F/S).  Varsity highlights from the meet include double winners Tiffany Yee (100 in 13.01 and 200 in 26.82), Katie Ring (34’ 6” in Triple and 5’ 0” in High Jump), Rachel Gate (16.71 in 100HH and 49.11 in 300IH), Jason Quiambao (16.60 in 110HH and 44.60 in 300IH) and Andy Vargas (52’ 2” in Shot and 139’ 6” in Discus).  All in all a good day for the Lancers with many Seasonal and Personal Bests.  Next up in Stanford and the F/S Top 8 meets this Friday and Saturday.

Stanford, F/S Top 8 Entries.  New Start Time for SHC.
The entries for the Stanford Invitational and the F/S CCS Top 8 meets are posted below.  Relay teams at Stanford compete on Saturday, field events are Friday.  The F/S CCS Top 8 (well, actually, 16 or 24) is on Friday.

This week we compete against Sacred Heart Cathedral at home.  The new meet start time is 3:30THERE IS NO EARLY DISMISSAL this week!

Also, this past weekend was the West Vally Relays.  While St. Francis did not compete in the meet, there were some very notworthly times.  Check it out below.

Serra / Notre Dame Belmont Come to town…
This week’s WCAL meet saw St. Francis hosting Junipero Serra (Boys) and Notre Dame – Belmont (Girls).  Both the Varsity and JV Girls won their divisions.  Varsity highlights include Natasha Barthel’s season best of 12’ 6” in the Pole Vault, Katie Ring winning both the Triple Jump (34’ 4”) and the High Jump (5’ 0”), T.J. Nereu throwing 31’ 0.5” in the Shot, and the girls winning 15 of the 16 events in the meet.  The JV Girls were lead by double event winners Carlie Mack (1600 and 3200) and Michelle Hess (100HH and 300IH).

Another St. Francis Invitational Success

This year’s version of the St. Francis Invitational featured 62 teams and over 1,500 athletes.  Both the Boys and Girls Frosh/Soph teams captured the team titles, and there were 3 meet records – two by St. Francis athletes: Casey Roche at 16’ 1” in the Boys Pole Vault, and Natasha Barthel at 12’ 5” in the Girls Pole Vault.  Complete results and pictures are available on the meet website here.

St. Francis at the K-Bell

This week at the K-Bell Invitational at Los Gatos High School saw several outstanding performances, and many seasonal and personal bests.  Leading the way for the Girls was Natasha Barthel winning the Pole Vault with a mark of 12’ 0” for the second time this week and Mele Penitani winning the Discus at 104’ 4”..  Other notable performances included Samantha Mravca (1:02.03) and Monica Harnato (1:02.06) in the 400, Adriana Romero in the 800 (2:30.75) and 1600 (5:32.97), and a good early-season mark by Amaka Uzoh in the 300IH (52.00).  Audrey Kocmond jumped 4’ 10” in the High Jump.

The Boys side of the meet had both Varsity and F/s divisions.  Glyn Hopson-Borel (11.56), Marty Manoukian (11.82), Brian Glassanos (11.82) and Kiley Lebuit (11.93) all turned in fine times in the 100, Marty came back in the 200 with a 24.05, Kevin Murphy returned to last season form with a 2:05.61 in the 800, Phil Pompei continues his 1600 PR run with a 4:33.48 and Tyler Ippoliti ran 16.86 in the 110HH.   In the Field Events Omar Bourgoub jumped 6’ 4” in the High Jump, the Pole Vaulters went 1 (Adam Campi 14’ 0”), 3 (Tyler Benham 13’ 0”), 4 (Brett Benham 13’ 0”) and 5 (Kevin Middleton 13’ 0”), and Andy Vargas threw the Shot Put 54’ 7” on 3 days of practice.

Mitty Comes to Town…

On Wednesday St. Francis hosted the first league meet of the year against Archbishop Mitty.  In a very exciting meet that came down to the last event of the meet, the Mitty girls squeaked out a victory in both the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions.  There were some very good individual winning marks including Natasha Barthel jumping 12’ 0” in the Pole Vault, Katie Ring in both the Triple Jump at 34’ 8” and the Long Jump in 16’ 9”, Katie Lanier throwing the Discus for 99’ 7” and Shelby Golan winning the 3200 in 12:03.30

Both of the Boys teams defeated Mitty.  Highlights to come…

Next Up:  NCAA Recruiting Night and Mitty!

On Monday (March 5) Saint Francis will be hosting an education night for prospective college athletes.  All athletes are invited to attend at 7:00pm in Malcom Center.

On Wednesday (March 7) St. Francis will be hosting Mitty in the first WCAL dual meet of the year.  The meet starts at 2:30pm.

MPR Results in 2 State Leaders…

The Girls team sent 4 vaulters, and the Boys sent a mixed F/S and Varsity team to the Mt. Pleasant Relays on Saturday.  The skeleton crew resulted in 2 Outdoor State Mark Leaders:  Senior Natasha Barthel stands alone in the Girls Pole Vault with her 12-04 performance, and junior Omar Bouraoub shares the lead with 4 others at 6-06 in the High Jump.  Complete results are available here.

Practice Meet Against Paly, Harker and California…

On Thursday St. Francis hosted Palo A lot High School, the Harker Academy and California High School from San Ramon in a tune-up meet.  Highlights include senior Natasha Barthel clearing 11-06 in the Girls Pole Vault; senior Casey Roche clearing 15-06 in the Boys Pole Vault; junior Omar Bouraoub cleared 6-04 in the High Jump and junior Katie Ring jumped 35-11 in the Triple Jump.

College Information Night

Next Monday (March 5) Saint Francis will be hosting an education night for prospective college athletes.  The night is for freshmen, sophomore and junior athletes that are interested in continuing their athletic carrers into college.  A panel discussion followed by a question and answer session will be held.  The panel consists of Debbie DeAngelis, CSU East Bay Athletic Director, Mike Zirelli, Assistant Baseball coach at Santa Clara University, Tom Service, Head Track and Cross Country coach at Santa Clara University and Shannon Rosenberg, Head Men's Basketball coach at Foothill College .  The event starts at 7:00pm in the Macolm Center.  If you are even slightly interested in competing at the college level, this is a must-attend event.

Senior Casey Roche continues his fantastic early season vaulting with a mark of 16-06 to win the Pole Vault competition.  Casey is currently tied for #1 in CCS and the State of California.

Zimbabwe Run Set for March 25

The eighth annual Run for Zimbabwe Orphans is scheduled this year for Sunday. March 25.  This event is to raise money for orphans in Zimbabwe and is run by Mrs. Ellen Clark.   The run  is in need of volunteers and runners.  This meet has cleaance from CCS to allow in-season athletes to participate in this event.  Click here for more details.

Casey Goes 16-00 at LG All-Comers
In the first All-Comers meet of the year, senior Casey Roche cleared 16-00 to win the Pole Vault competition.  That’s a remarkable height so early in the season.  Casey’s PR (and School Record) is 17-05 set last summer at the Junior Nationals.

Los Gatos All-Comers Meets Start in January

The Los Gatos All-Comers meet start on Saturday, January 6 at Los Gatos High School.  The meet has age groups, costs $4.00 per athlete for unlimited events, has nothing to do with the school team, and events start at 1:00pm.  If you are interested, additional information is available here.

Casey and Natasha Sign NOI to Attend Stanford

Seniors Casey Roche and Natahsa Barthel today both signed their National Letter of Intent to attend Stanford University next year.  Stanford scored huge for next year by grabbing the #1 returning male high school vaulter in the nation (17’ 5”), and the #6 returning female high school vaulter in the nation (12’ 10”).  Casey and Natasha join 2006 St. Francis graduate Ben Sheehan (15’5” in high school) at Stanford next year.  For more information on Casey and Natasha, refer to College Signings….

St. Francis Track and Field Invitational Moved!

The date of the 2007 St. Francis Track and Field Invitational has been moved from April 7 to March 17.  The move was made for a couple of reasons.  First, in 2007 Easter Sunday is April 8.  Secondly, due to the date of the State Meet in 2007 and 2008, all of the Southern Section meets have moved backwards one weekend – putting the Arcadia Invitational on April 7 this year.
