Update:
Bunje Sets School Record in Long Jump
Somehow I missed the fact
during the regular season the senior Kyle Mills-Bunje broke the Long
Jump School Record TWICE at the end of the season. In the State Meet
Trials Kyle jumped 23-06 to qualify for the finals. Kyle then came
back in the finals to jump 23-08.75 for a New School Record.
The old record of 23-03.5 was set way back 1983 by Jeff Rossman.

Casey
Roche: National JO Champion at 17’ 5.00”
This is getting a bit repetitive,
but Casey Roche is having a FANTASTIC summer. On July 29, 2006
in Baltimore, Maryland at the National Junior Olympics Casey Rcohe not
only won the competition, but also broke his own School Record AGAIN
with an amazing jump of 17-05 (5.31m). The mark is also a Central
Coast Section, Junior Olympic and National Youth records as
well. To round out the year, Casey is tied with Scott Roth at the #3 spot on
the California
All-Time List and is the #1 returning Pole Vaulter in California for next
year by over a foot and one-half. Click here
for a video of the jump, and here
for a video of his earlier the same day jump at 17-02.

Casey Set
SR Twice in One Week. Clears 17’ 0”
On July 13 at the Los Gatos
All-Comers Meet soon-to-be-senior Casey Roche cleared 17’ 0” in
the Pole Vault – a new School Record. Casey co-held the old
record this past season at 16’ 7” with 2006 senior Kyle Mills-Bunje. Casey
has had a phenomenal summer so far. Casey jumped 16-09.25 at the Junior Olympics Regional Qualifiers, and then on Thursday he cleared
17 feet. According to DyeStatCal.com that ties him for #12 on the all-time California HS pole vaulting list and the ninth 17-foot vaulter in the Nation this year. Casey is also the
number 1 rated returning high school vaulter in California and #2 the nation.
Click here for the video and additional

What can we say that has not already been said about Ben except to say the
Mercury was right.

was named Vertical Jumper of the Year. Congratulations to all three
athletes. A part version of the story is available here. The full story is available on the SJMN

Recap: New
School Records: 4 Girls, 6 Boys
It was another good year for
the Lancers as far as their assault on the record book. The Girl’s team set 4
records this year: Junior Natasha Barthel in the Pole Vault at 12’
10”, senior Sela Paini in the Discus at 148’ 4”, the
Distance Medley team of junior Michelle Roemer, senior
Angela Celentano, senior Samantha Williams and sophomore Shelby
Golan in 12:59.17; and the JV 4x400 team of sophomore Ashmi
Pathela, freshmen Monica Harnato, freshmen Monika Sullivan
and Philbin in 4:17.4.
On the Boys side 6 new
records were also set this year: Senior Ben Silter had a part in 4 of
those records: The 1600 in 4:10.55 (to break Mike Kasser’s 32 year
old record), the 3000 in 8:33.42, and the 3200 in an
incredible run of 8:53.47. His 3200 time converts to an outstanding 8:16.93
for the 3000 as well. Sitler joined teammates senior Eric Johnson,
sophomore Ben Plattner and senior Sam Pompei in setting a new Distance
Medley time of 10:24.51. The other major story of the year was
senior Kyle Mills-Bunje and junior Casey Roche both breaking
the record in the Pole Vault with jumps of 16’ 7”. Kyle also
set the school record in the Long Jump twice at the State Meet with
the final record being set at 23-08.75.

Post-season
Action: Golden West Invitational
At the Golden West Invitational
this past weekend near Sacramento, several of St. Francis’ Track athletes
competed in the post-season invitational. In the Girls Pole Vault Natasha
Barthel took third with a jump of 12’ 9” and Taylor Franklin
took seventh at 11’ 9”. In the Boys Pole Vault Casey Roche was
one of six vaulters to all finish at 16’ 3”, but finished third on
attempts. In the 3200 Ben Sitler won the race in 9:07.44.
DyeStatCal.com
stated: “Sitler proved
much too strong for his rivals in galloping away to a near 3.5-second win
over San Diego area's Colton Tully-Doyle (lifetime-best 9:10.88). The
powerful Sitler appeared least affected by the winds which began whipping up
entering the latter half of the race.”

State:
Best Boys Showing by CCS Team Since 1993
This past weekend the California
State High School Track and Field Championships were held in the
extremely hot (figuratively and literally) Cerritos College in Norwalk. St.
Francis brought its largest contingent of athletes (15) to the meet in many
years. At Friday’s trials Ben Sheehan (PV) and Casey Roche (PV),
Natasha Barthel and Taylor Franklin (PV), and Kyle
Mills-Bunje (LJ) survived crueling competition to make it to the finals.
Sam Pompei set a new personal record in the 800 with a time of 1:55.66,
but 9 other runners ran an astonishing 1:52 to take the qualifying spots. Sela
Paini threw the Discus 122’ 10”, and Andy Vargas and David
Wernick threw the Shot 53’ 5.5” and 51’ 2.75”,
respectively. Omar Bourgoub cleared the opening height of 6’ 3”,
but failed to make the next height to finish his season 1 inch below his
personal best. And the Girls 4x400 relay team of Angela Celentano,
Rachel Gate, Shanie Landen and Samantha Williams ran 3:59.74
to finish 17 out of 27 teams (not bad since we came in ranked 24 out of 27).
On Saturday, St. Francis
finished with a string of third place finishes. Casey Roche was one
of only 4vaulters to clear 16’ 5” in the Men’s Pole Vault, Nataha
Barthel cleared 12’ 9” in the Women’s Pole Vault, Kyle
Mills-Bunje pulled out a great final jump of 23’ 6” in the Long
Jump, and Ben Sitler (who did not have trials on Friday) finished
with a very good time of 9:02.56 in the 3200. Ben Sheehan
missed at the opening height of 15’ 5” and Taylor Franklin tied for
seventh at 11’ 9”.

CCS
Finals: Boys Capture Championship
Last night at San Jose City
College the Boys Varsity Track and Field Team scored their first-ever CCS
Track Championship. The team was lead by double winner Ben Sitler who
took both the 1600 (4:15.06) and 3200 (9:13.99) titles. Ben
was not the only individual winner. Sam Pompei won a very close 800
(1:56.28) to complete a distance-sweep by St. Francis athletes. Kyle
Mill-Bunje won the Long Jump in a huge leap of 23’ 6.25” and
Casey Roche won the Pole Vault in 16’ 2”. Also helping
the cause was Ben Sheehan in the Pole Vault (fourth in 14’
11”), Omar Bourgoup in the High Jump (third in 6’ 2”),
David Wernick (second in 57’ 0.25”) and Andy Wernick
(third in 54’ 6”) in the Shot Put, and the 4x100 Relay’s
(Roche, Mill-Bunje, David Glassanos and Ben Plattner) fourth-place
finish (43.25). Everyone except the 4x100 and Casey in the Long Jump
advances to the State Meet next Friday at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

CCS
Finals: Girls Take Third Place
Last night at San Jose City College the Girls Varsity Track and Field Team finished a very exciting evening
with a third-place finish in the CCS Championships. This is a major improvement
over last year’s eighth-place finish and was accomplished by several very
fine efforts from the team. The evening started off with gallant effort by Sela
Paini finishing second in the Discus (133’ 4”) despite an injured
throwing arm. The 4x100 Relay team of Tiffany Yee, Samantha
Williams, Shanie Landen and Angela Celentano took fourth
(with a season best 49.51). Samantha Williams missed qualifying for
the State Meet in the 400 by 1/100 of a second with a fourth place
finish in a time of 57.24. The 4x400 Relay team of Angela
Celentano, Monika Sullivan, Shanie Landen and Samantha Williams broke
the 4-minute barrier (for the first time in a very long time), and guaranteed
themselves a trip to Norwalk, with a third place finish in 3:58.60. Natasha
Barthel (12’ 8”) and Taylor Franklin (11’ 8”) finished second and
third in the Pole Vault. Katie Ring finished fifth in the Triple
Jump with a mark of 35’ 7.5”. Everyone except the 4x100 and Katie
in the Triple Jump advance to the State Meet on Friday and Saturday.

CCS Trials:
10 Girls, 9 Boys Go to Finals!
Saturday at the CCS Trials saw
some outstanding personal efforts, and a couple of unexpected setbacks. On
the Girls side, both relay team (4x100 of Tiffany Yee, Samanatha
Williams, Shanie Landen and Angela Celentano and the 4x400
of Williams, Celentano, Landen and Monika Sullivan) made it through to
the finals. Samantha Williams (400), Sela Paini (winning the Discus),
Natsha Barthel (PV), Taylor Franklin (PV) and Katie Ring
(LJ) qualified individually.
On the Boys side, the 4x100
relay team (Casey Roche, Kyle Mills Bunje, David Glassanos
and Ben Plattner) qualified, as did individuals Ben Sitler (winning
both the 1600 and 3200), Bunje (winning the LJ), Roche (winning the PV and fourth
in the LJ), Ben Sheehan (PV), David Wernick (SP), Andy
Vargas (SP) and Omar Bourgoub (HJ). In what is probably the biggest shock of the
day, Kyle missed clearing his opening height of 14’ 0” in the Pole Vault.
Kyle is currently ranked #4 in the state in the Pole Vault.
If the Finals were held on
Saturday, the St. Francis boys would have scored 78 points to win the meet,
while the girls would have scored 38 to finish third behind Mt. Pleasant and Valley Christian. It should be a good meet on Friday evening at the Finals!

three very fine marks: the 1600 in 4:21.66, the 800 in 1:55.84,
and the 3200 in 9:27.23. Other notable efforts included Sam
Pompei’s 1:56.00 800; Casey Roche and Kyle Mills-Bunje
trading spots in the Long Jump (Kyle at 22’ 9”, Casey second at
21’ 9”) and the Pole Vault (Casey first and Kyle second, both
at 16’ 0”); Kyle second in the 100 (11.12); Ben
Sheehan third in the PV (14-06) and David Wernick (55’ 4.5”)

Varsity
and JV Girls WCAL Co-Champions
The Varsity Girls went undefeated
in the Dual Meet season and then finished second to Valley Christian on
Saturday in the League Championships. The Girls therefore share the league
title with Valley. The Girls were lead by some outstanding efforts while
amassing 122 points for second. Natasha Barthel jumped to a new PR in
the Pole Vault at 12’ 10” (new School Record and #4 in the
State!) and Taylor Franklin was second at 12’ 0” (#10 in the
State). Rachel Gate had a very busy day with 2 PRs (100HH in 16.64,
300IH in 46.72) and running the second leg of the 4x400 to a new
season record. Seniors Angela Celentano (4x100, 100 in 12.72
and 4x400) and Samantha Williams (4x100, 200 in 26.92, 400
in 58,18 and 4x400) both also had long days. Sophomore Katie Ring
won the Triple Jump (35’ 7.75”), took fourth in the High
Jump (5’ 0”), and fifth in the Long Jump (16’ 0.5”).
Sela Paini won the Discus (132’ 9”) and took fourth in
the Shot (33’ 2”). Many of the other girls achieved personal
record (PRs) in their respective events. All in all, it was a very good day.
In Junior Varsity Girls
also went undefeated in the Dual Meet season, and finished
second to Mitty on Saturday to become Co-Champions with Mitty. Like
the Varsity Girls, the JV Girls setup a lot of good marks with many, many
PRs. We lost to Mitty by only 3 points!

Ben
Sitler: San Jose Mercury Athlete of the Week
For the second week in a row a
St. Francis Track & Field athlete has been named Athlete of the Week in
the San Jose Mercury News. This week it was Ben Sitler’s turn. The
Mercury wrote: “At the Arcadia Invitational in Southern California on Saturday, the Princeton-bound runner placed
third in the 3,200 meters in 8 minutes, 53.47 seconds, shattering his
personal best by 17 seconds. He also nearly broke the Central Coast Section record of 8:52.11, set in 1981 by Independence's Jesse Torres. Sitler began with
a 64-second split in his first lap and moved to the front of the pack halfway
through. After drifting to sixth on the back stretch of the final lap, Sitler
sprinted the final 300 meters to finish just behind Matt Tebo of New Mexico's
El Dorado High (8:52.23) and longtime rival A.J. Acosta from El Camino of
Oceanside (8:51.30). For only the second time in national high school
history, eight runners broke 9 minutes in the same 3,200 race. ``For an
athlete to run well under 9 is a very rare event in high school athletics,''
St. Francis distance coach Brian Curley said. ``To do it under control and
with authority is pretty astonishing.''” A related arctice in the Mercury the same day is available here.

The time is the second fastest time in CCS history, #2 in the state of California and the #3 fastest times in the United States this year. The old record of 9:10.46

Sela
Paini: San Jose Mercury Athlete of the Week
The Mercury says: “Sela Paini fractured her right hand during a St.
Francis basketball game in November. Five games after her February return,
she broke her collarbone, putting her track and field season in jeopardy,
too. Paini spent six weeks recovering, missing only one Lancers meet, and in
a dual meet Wednesday against Notre Dame-Belmont, she set a school record
with the third-longest discus throw in the state this year: 148 feet, 4
inches. She also recorded a 36-4 shot-put mark, which is sixth in the Central Coast Section this season. Paini finished second in the discus (137-7) on Saturday
at the Stanford Invitational. ``Sela's a dedicated, conscientious athlete who
works very hard at what she does,'' throws coach Roberta Chisam said. ``She's
very easy to coach.''” Click here

CCS
At-Large Qualifying Marks Available
The CCS has adopted a new
policy this year to accept CCS Standard Qualifying Marks for entry into the
CCS Semi-Finals. The standards will be published shortly. The rules for
determining the marks are: “If an
athlete does not qualify for the CCS Semi-Finals at his/her League
Championship Meet, but his/her mark is equal to or better than the average of
the last place qualifying mark to CCS Finals from the three [3]
most recent years, then that athlete will be added to the CCS Semi-Final
competition. This provision is for all events, including relay's.”This is good news since now all athletes will have
known qualifying marks prior to their League Finals.
