Pictures of the Week

No Guts, No Glory…
Junior Ben Sitler
, running in the California State Meet Finals with a torn meniscus and very little training over the past 3 weeks gives it his all to stay with and excellent field in the 3200 meter run. Even Ben could not maintain this kind of pace without training and while straining. Ben and other Junior Kyle Mills-Bunje tie for gustiest performances of the year. Kyle vaulted and jumped on a torn groin muscle in order to stay in the competition. Kyle earlier in the year at Arcadia cleared 13’ 6" while dislocating his right shoulder ON THE WAY UP! No more excuses about shin splints…

California State Meet Championships – Finals
At Sacramento City College on Saturday afternoon / evening, Sophomore Casey Roche finished with a jump of 15’ 08" in the Pole Vault for fifth place in the State. This despite breaking his pole on his second vault of the day. Casey recovered from that and cleared his next two heights on his first attempts at each height. Junior Kyle Mills-Bunje attempted to jump again on his torn groin muscle but failed to clear the opening height of 14’ 11" in the Pole Vault. Junior Ben Sitler, also plagued with a leg injury) a torn meniscus in his knee), finished eighteenth in the 3200 meters with a time of 9:33. Ben ran a 4:35 opening mile but 3 weeks of no training caught up to him in the second half.
Sophomore Natasha Barthel finished seventh in the Pole Vault with a mark of 11’ 06".

California State Meet Championships – Trials
At Sacramento City College Friday afternoon / evening, the best of California Track and Field met to determine the State Meet Championships. Sophomore Casey Roche (15’ 04") and Junior Kyle Mills-Bunje (14’ 10") both qualified in the Pole Vault for Saturday’s finals. Despite a torn groin muscle Kyle managed to beat three other competitors in a jump off for the final spot in Saturday’s competition. Kyle was also entered in the Long Jump but had to scratch from that competition after only one jump due to his injury. Junior David Wernick threw for 52’ 04" in the Shot Put but failed to make the finals.
In the Girl’s competition, Sophomore Natasha Barthel finished at 12’ 03" with 7 other girls to qualify fourth for the finals on Saturday. Junior Taylor Franklin cleared 11’ 09" with 5 other girls but missed at 12’ 00" in the jump-off. Taylor tied for fourth in the finals last year with a jump of 11’ 04".

Central Coast Section Championships – Boys
Friday evening at Los Gatos High School the St. Francis Boys team took second overall in the competition. The team was once again lead by some outstanding performances in the Pole Vault. Casey, Kyle and Kyle all qualified for the State Meet. Kyle Mills-Bunje also finished second in the Long Jump (22’ 07.25" – .5 inches short of first) and third in the Triple Jump (45’ 09.5"). Kyle competed in all four events with a sore groin muscle that was later diagnosed as torn. Ouch! Junior Ben Sitler won the 3200 in a time of 9:21.11 and Senior Brian Fisher had a huge PR to finish in fifth with a time of 9:35.27. The 4x100 Relay Team (Kyle Mills-Bunje, Desmond Howard, Ryan Perry and Oliver Plattner) finished fourth with a time of 42.87. Senior Oliver Plattner also finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 22.39. San Francisco Chronicle Chronicles Kyle’s Jumping
The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper did a nice story on Junior Kyle Mills-Bunge in the paper this past Wednesday. The story focused primarily on his vaulting (first in CCS), but almost mentioned his Triple Jump (first in CCS) and Long Jump (second in CCS) . Check the full text of the article here.

12 Athletes Make It to CCS Finals
Many St. Francis Track and Field athletes at the CCS Semi-Finals on Saturday qualified for next Friday night’s CCS Finals. Completing a particularly good day was Junior Kyle Mills-Bunge. Kyle finsihed first in the Pole Vault with a mark of 15’ 9". This mark is the best mark in CCS this year. Kyle also qualified in the Triple Jump (third at 46’ 2"), Long Jump (second at 22’ 7") and the 4x100 Relay (fourth at 43.12). Also qualifying is Junior Ben Sitler in the 3200 (first at 9:27.39) and 1600 (third at 4:21.57); Senior Oliver Plattner in the 200 (fifth in 22.31) and 4x100; Senior Brian Fisher in the 3200 (sixth in 9:45.74); Pole Vaulters Ben Sheehan (14’ 6"), Kyle Chronis (14’ 6") and Casey Roche (14’ 0") and Junior David Wernick who took first in the Shot Put with a throw of 52’ 4.75". Boys WCAL Champions Second Year in a Row
The Varsity Boys this year gained sole possession of first place in the WCAL with a win at the WCAL Championships (last year we were co-champions with Riordan). The Lancer Varsity Boys were undefeated on the season. Highlights include Junior Ben Sitler winning both the 1600 in 4:19.55 and the 3200 in 9:49.05, and taking third in the 800 with a very fast 1:58.76. Junior Sam Pompei also broke 2:00 for the first time with a fourth-place finish in 1:58.82. Junior Kyle Mills-Bunge also won two events jumping 22’ 10" in the Long Jump and 47’ 3.5" in the Triple Jump. Junior David Wernick scored second in the Shot Put with a huge throw of 52’ 0". And, in something we tend to take for granted, the Pole Vaulters finished first (Sophomore Casey Roche in a new F/S School Record and Meet Record 15’ 7"), second (Kyle Mills-Bunge in 15’ 00"), third (Junior Ben Sheehan at 14’ 6") and fourth (Senior Kyle Chronis also at 14’ 6").
In the Frosh/Soph Division Sophomores Adam Campi and Greg Schuck went first and second, respectively, in the Pole Vault by both clearing 11’ 6". Sophomore Kyle Stewart ("Hamster Bob") and Freshman Phillip Pompei both ran very fast 1600s in 4:43.66 and 4:43.69, respectively. Freshman Kiley Libuit finished second in the High Jump at 5’ 8". Sophomore Nick Hedgepeth threw 48’ 10.5" in the Shot Put.

Girls Finish Second in WCAL
The Varsity Girls finished second in the meet to Archbishop Mitty – who we beat earlier in the year. But since we lost to SI earlier in the year, and Mitty beat SI, Mitty is league champions. We had many great individual performances and team efforts. Junior Taylor Franklin won the event and set the Meet Record in the Pole Vault with a mark of 12’ 6". Sophomore Natasha Barthel was second in 12’ 0". Samantha Williams won the 400 in 57.44. The 4x400 Relay team of Angela Celentano, Rachel Gate, Christina Nguyen and Samantha Williams finished third but ran an impressive 4:04.93 to break their season best time by 8 seconds.
In the Junior Varsity Division Sophomore Chelsea Hendow set the Meet Record and the JV Girls School Record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.83. Freshman Alyssa Arvin won the 1600 in 5:45.22. Freshman Any Harris won the Pole Vault with a 7’ 6" jump. Sophomore Katie Lainer won the Discus (and broke her own JV Girls School Record) with a throw of 99’ 1.5" to barely beat teammate sophomore Nupur Mathur (99’ 0").

Finally (and we mean this in a good way): Junior Ben Sitler breaks 2:00. After running 2:00.(something) for most of the year, Ben broke through with the fastest 800 time of the day at 1:58.00. Also, Junior Kyle Mills-Bunge flew for 23’ 0" to lead all qualifiers in the Long Jump. Many other Lancer Varsity and Frosh/Soph Boys qualified for Saturday’s Finals at Mitty. Complete F/S Boys Field Event Results, and Varsity and F/S qualifiers are listed below.

05/11/05

WCAL Trials – Girls
Many good marks and some unfortunate results. We qualified a large group of both Varsity and JV Girls for Saturday’s WCAL Finals. Complete JV Girls Field Event Results, and Varsity and JV qualifiers are listed below.

Sitler planned to run 70-second laps and work on his consistency. At the Mt. Pleasant Relays in February, he ran the second-fastest time this year in the Central Coast Section for the 1,600 meters at 4:17.
