Varsity Boys Third in WCAL.  Qualify for CCS

On Wednesday at Crystal Springs in Belmont, under near perfect running conditions, the Varsity boys team finished third in the WCAL Championships.  The race was extremely close with on 7 points (and 13 seconds) separating Bellarmine (1 on points, 2 on time), Serra (2 in points, 3 on time) and St. Francis (3 on points, 1 on time).  St. Francis did have the fastest team time of the day thanks to several significant PRs and senior Phil Pompei’s overall first place finish in a time of 15:46.  The other 4 scorers were junior Steve Foster (6 in 16:14), senior Matt Ong (7 in 16:14), sophomore Kyle Anderberg (18 in 16:35) and senior Will Conner (20 in 16:38).  The team time ranks #18 on the SFHS All-Time Crystal Springs List.  Kyle Anderberg also moved up on the Sophomore list (Phil ran almost the exact same time that he ran at the Crystal Springs Invitational two weeks ago)..

WCAL II: Repeat of WCAL I

On Wednesday St. Francis hosted the second of three WCAL meets.  This one, at Shoreline XC Course in Mountain View (3 miles) was somewhat of a repeat of WCALI:  St. Francis Boys won 3 of 4 individual titles.  Once again Phil Pompei won the Varsity race, Colton Wright won the Sophomore race, and Chris Reis won the Freshmen race.

The Varsity race was, like WCAL I, won by Phil Pompei.  Phil finished in a time of 15:51 – 6 seconds ahead of second place, and #2 on both the All-Time Shoreline, and St. Francis All-Time Shoreline lists.  Phil was followed this week by Matt Ong (12 in 16:27), Will Conner (24 in 16:53), Steven Foster (26 in 16:54) and Kyle Anderberg (29 in 17:06).  The team finished fourth this go round behind Bellarmine, SI and Serra.

The Junior Varsity team also finished in fourth place this week.  Chris Lee (15 in 17:42) and Cody Stahl (17 in 17:44) lead the pack.  Bach Nguyen (27 in 18:08), Daniel Curley (28 in 18:12) and Alex Devlin (39 in 18:48) completed the scoring.

The Sophomore Boys improved their third place finish in WCAL I by beating St. Ignatius to capture second.  The team was lead again by Colton Wright (1 in 17:06).  He was followed by Nick Fiore (7 in 17:38), Ian Midiere (9 in 17:51), Andres Schrier (11in 17:56) and Michael Condon (30 in 19:22).  Ian moved up 2 spots, and Michael moved up 6 from last week to make the difference this time around.  Michael also improved his Shoreline time  by over 3 minutes from last year!

The Freshmen team finished sixth this week after finishing second at WCAL I.  The point spread between second and sixth was 20 points (2-91, 3-99, 4-101, 5-104, 6-110).  This was even closer than two weeks ago.  Chris Reis’ time of 16:55 is the fastest St. Francis freshmen, and the #2 freshmen ever to run the Shoreline course.   Chris (1), Eric Gasmin (18 in 19:04), Zac Comstock (26 in 19:47), Brian Vu (32 in 20:16) and Arun Durvasula (33 in 20:23) were the coring members of the team.

Cross Country Alumni Update

From the Archives…

Way back in 1973 Steve Fuller (then a senior at Carlmont High School) and Mike Kasser (St. Francis junior and 1 Mile school record holder) ran for the Woodside Striders team during the summer (as did St. Francis runners Tom Jordan and Davy Cortez).  Pictured here is Steve throwing water at Mike during the Tahoe Relays (which the Striders finished in third place that year).  It was in the mid-90’s that day and a forest fire was burning – showering the Tahoe basin with ash.
