CCS Championships: Boys Just Miss State with #4 Finish
At the Central Coast Section Championships this past Saturday at Toro Park in Salinas, the Boys Cross Country team finished off their season with a very narrow fourth place finish to just miss a trip to the State Meet.  This year the Lancers are in Division II which has 3 spots to the State Meet (our old Division, number 3, has 4).  The team was once again lead by senior Kyle Stewart (16 in 16:35) and junior Phil Pompei (17 in 16:38).  Seniors Mike Calcagno (27 in 16:59) and Kevin Murphy (44 in 17:23), and junior Tim Gates (46 in 17:24) completed the scoring portion of the team.  Several of the members of the team made it onto, or improved their standing on the SFHS All-Time Toro Park List.  Out of 67 teams that ran on the day, St. Francis finished tenth overall.  Complete results are available here.

WCAL Championships

Finally, the results are in.  The Varsity team continued to improve with a third-place finish in this race to finish the season in third behind St. Ignatius and Bellarmine.  The Lancers were lead again this week by Kyle Stewart (#3 in 16:09), Phil Pompei (#8 in 16: 15) and Mike Calcagno (#14 in 16:38).  The Varsity team qualified for the CCS Championships next Saturday at Toro Park in Salinas.  The team also made it onto the All-Time Crystal Springs List with a team time of 83:16.
The Junior Varsity team finished this race, and the season, in fourth place.  We actually tied Serra for third but Serra broke the tie with their sixth runner.  Tim Gates lead the JV squad with #2 place finish and an excellent time of 16:59.
The Sophomore team finished fifth for the race and the season.  They were lead by a #7 finish from Steven Foster with a time of 17:44.
In a very close race, the Freshmen team finished second to a surprising St. Ignatius team by a score of 41 to 43.  Even though St. Francis beat SI in the two previous races, with the scoring system we have in XC SI and St. Francis will share the Freshmen league title.  The team was lead by a very fine performance from Nick Fiore (#2 in 17:42).

CCS At-Large Standards

There are two methods for qualifying from the WCAL Meet to the CCS Meet in Cross Country in 2006.  The first, and preferable, is to qualify by finishing in the top half of the league.  The second is for the team to run a time at Crystal Springs or Toro Park to automatically qualify for CCS.

Division 2 - Boys At-Large Standards For The CCS Meet
87:21 at Crystal    We are 84:13
88:41 at Toro       We are 86:22

We currently qualify on both courses for D II CCS.

WCAL II – Shoreline.  Frosh Continue to Win!  Varsity Whole.
For the first time this year, the Varsity team assembled the squad that we have hoped to field most of the year.  Leading the way again was junior Phil Pompie (4 in 16:15).  He was followed closely by seniors Kyle Stewart (11 in 16:46), Mike Calcagno (finally healthy at 16 in 16:55), Kevin Rouse (24 in 17:29) and Kevin Murphy (27 in 17:37).  The team finished third this week (versus fifth two weeks ago in WCAL I).
The Junior Varsity team was helped by two Varsity runners and one sophomore borrowed from that race.  The team was lead by Tim Gates (4 in 17:35) and Daniel Curley (9 in 18:03).  They were helped by Bach Nguyen (17 in 18:19), Matt Ong (33 in 18:47) and Steven Foster (50 in 19:16).

The Sophomore team was lead by Cody Stahl (27 in 19:06).  He was followed by David Glenday (36 in 19:38), Sam Levy (41 in 20:01), Brendan Welch (57 in 20:34) and David Stallman (65 in 20:49).
The Freshmen boys continued their winning ways – even with their #2 runner out with an injury.  The rest of the team rallied big time and finished first again this week-with a larger margin that in WCAL I!.  The team was lead by a strong team effort of 2-5-7-11-12 for for 37 points to SI’s 51.  Nick Fiore (18:03) lead the way, followed by Kyle Anderberg (18:38), Seth Newmeyer (18:48), Colton Wright (19:08) and  Iam Midiere (19:09).

New this year: the SFHS All-Time Shoreline List.  Check it out.

Crystal Springs Invitational
At the Crystal Springs Invitational this past weekend the Varsity, JV and Freshmen tams competed for the first time this year at Crystal Springs.  In a tune-up for the WCAL II meet on November 1, there were some good marks posted.  The Varsity team was moved into the Championship race and was lead by Kyle Stewart (8 in 16:01 – just missing the All-Time Crystal Springs List).  He was followed by Phil Pompei (14 in 16:32), Kevin Murphy (22 in 16:56), Will Conner (25 in 17:04) and Daniel Curley (32 in 17:35).

With the Sophomore and Junior Varsity teams devastated by injury and a band competition, we combined the remainder of both teams into one and ran them in the JV race.  Leading the way into a sixth place finish was Tim Gates (10 in 17:40) and Steven Foster (11 in 17:48).  They were followed by Alex Devlin (39 in 19:07), Brendan Welch (40 in 19:10) and Chris Lee (46 in 19:26).

The Freshmen team finished third.  They were led this week by Seth Newmeyer (12 in 18:17).  Seth was followed by Colton Wright (19 in 18:33), Kyle Anderberg (20 in 18:47), Ian Midiere (26 in 19:00) and Dashiell Leeds (34 in 19:12).

Clovis Invitational

The Varsity Boys traveled to Woodward Park in Fresno (the site of the California State XC Meet) this Saturday for the Clovis Invitational.  The boys were entered into the Championship race.  While their team score may be disappointing (25), it hides many fine personal efforts.  In fact, if the team had run in the Division 3 race their team time of 1:25:49 would have been the #2 time in that race.  Leading the way again this race (the Varsity team’s third race in eight days) was Phil Pompei with a time of 16:22. This moves Phil from #15 to #11 on the SFHS All-Time Woodard Park List.  He was followed closely by Kyle Stewart (16:37; moving from 23 to 20 on the list), Kevin Murphy (17:23), Tim Gates (17:37) and Will Connor (17:51; running under the name Mike Calcagno).  Click here for the complete results of the Championship and D3 races.

WCAL I – Golden Gate Park

The first of three WCAL meets took place on Wednesday at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  The Varsity team ran without Mike Calcagno and Kevin Rouse.  The team finished fourth overall.  The squad was lead by junior Phil Pompei (4 in 16:69).  He was followed by Kyle Stewart (7 in 17:11), Kevin Murphy (22 in 17:49), Alex Blease (31 in 18:18) and Matt Ong (39 in 18:40).

The Junior Varsity team took fifth.  The first finisher was Daniel Curley (13 in 18:40), followed by Back Nguyen (31 in 19:17), John Wedig (40 in 19:39), Alex Devlin (42 in 19:40) and Sean Slattery (61 in 20:32).

The final race of the day provided the best results of the day for the team.  The Freshmen team took first place – beating SI 36 to 45.  The group achieved this results with a 3-4-6-9-14 finish from Nick Fiore (18:38), Andres Schrier (18:56), Colton Wright (18:59), Kyle Anderberg (19:02) and Seth Mewmeyer (19:34).

Meanwhile, At Stanford…

The Varsity Boys team headed up the road to the golf course at Stanford University for the Stanford Invitational.  The team was lead by Phil Pompei who finished 32 out of a field of 320 in 16:39.  Phil was followed by Kyle (Hamster Bob) Stewart (48 in 16:49), Alex Blease (104 in 17:31), Kevin Murphy (133 in 17:48) and Matt Ong (205 in 18:37).

09/30/06

Westmoor Ram Invitational

Minus the Varsity team, the Freshmen, Sophomores and Junior Varsity went up to westmoor High school in Daly City for the Ram Invitational.  Being very short of functioning sophomores, the remaining sophomore boys ran with the JVs.  The team ran an excellent race but was displaced by a HUGE group of St. Ignatius JV boys for the title.  Leading the way for the Junior Varsity team was Will Connor (8 in 14:18).  Will was followed by Daniel Curley (11 in 14:31), Steven Foster (15 in 14:48), Cody Stahl (18 in 14:52) and Bach Nguyen (23 in 14:58).

The Freshmen team had a very hard-fought race with Gunn (70 points), Jesuit (71), us (73) and St. Ignatius (76).  Leading the way for St. Francis was Nick Fiore (7 in 14:33), Andres Schrier (10 in 14:38), Kyle Andenberg (16 in 14:49), Colton Wright (16 in 14:59) and Seth Newmeyer (23 in 15:23).

Boys Travel to Toro Park for Chieftain Invitational

The entire team traveled to the Palma Chieftain Invitational on Saturday.  The first race of the day saw a depleted Frosh/Soph team take sixth place out of 14 teams.  The combined team was lead by freshmen Nick Fiore’s 26 place finish in 19:00.  Nick was followed by sophomore Cody Stahl (29 in 19:08), freshmen Andreas Schrier (44 in 19:39), sophomore Chris Lee  (47 in 19:43) and freshmen Kyle Anderberg (48 in 19:43).  There were a total of  161 runners in the race.

The Junior Varsity Boys team was lead to the overall title by a 2-4-6 finish by juniors Matt Ong (18:40), Bach Nguyen (18:52) and Daniel Curley (19:00).  The team was rounded out by senior John Wedig (19:31) and junior Colin Sepera (19:48).  There were 121 runners and 10 teams in this race.

The Varsity Boys finished fourth out of 20 teams.  Junior Philip Pompei (6 in 16:25 and #5 on SFHS All-Time Toro List) and Kyle Stweart (7 in 16:36 and #7 at SFHS) lead the way.  They were followed by seniors Alex Blease (25 in 17:26) and Kevin Rouse (39 in 17:44), and junior Kevin Murphy (56 in 18:11).  There were 142 runners in the race.
Check out the Results and Pictures (F/S, JV and Varsity) below.  Also, the All-Time Toro List has several updates, including the fastest Freshmen team to run on the course.

St. Francis to Division II?
With our enrollment over 1,600 this year, St. Francis will probably be moving to Division II this year (the 2006 CBeds have not been published as of today).  DII in CCS includes such powerhouse teams as Los Gatos, Aptos, North Monterey County and Gunn.  Archbishop Mitty is the only other WCAL team in Division 2.  Click here for a view of the top 40 returning runners at Crystal from last year.
